What is Yahoo SiteBuilder?
Yahoo SiteBuilder is an easy-to-use content management system that makes most of the
technical aspects of a website transparent to a non-technical user.  It is great for small business
owners that want to create and maintain their own website without having to acquire any
technical knowledge.  They can do it themselves, or they can ask one of their staff to take on the
responsibility without unrealistic expectations.

It is easy to understand why a lot of small business owners would want to be able to create and
update their own content.  When you are forced to rely on the paid services of a web developer it
slows you down and costs money.

What type of application is a good
fit for Yahoo SiteBuilder ?
Yahoo Site Builder is a great tool for small, local, established businesses who rely primarily
on personal, word-of-mouth referrals.
An Endodontist is a good example.  Yahoo Site Builder
is good for do-it-yourselfers who want the ability to make frequent updates to their website
content.  It is also good for small business owners who are willing to eventually learn a little bit of
HTML so they can work around the short-comings of the tool.

Who should not use Yahoo
SiteBuilder?
Yahoo SiteBuilder is not a good tool for large and complex websites that want to be easily
found in organic search engine results.
It can still be used, but like mentioned above, you
should expect to initially have to learn some HTML and eventually migrate away from the tool
altogether.

Yahoo SiteBuilder is not a good tool to use if you want your site optimized.  What are Yahoo
Sitebuilder's shortcomings?

  • Important components of the site, for example link text, simply cannot be optimized because
you either do not have access to them (main menu buttons) or they are split when the link
text spans the width of the page.
  • Headings have to be coded in HTML (programming language).  That means you have to
learn a bit of HTML, and you have to fuss with the layout of your page to get everything to
    align properly.
  • The code generated by the content management system is not optimized, meaning it
violates industry standards.  This is a Google ranking factor.
  • Because the code has errors, pages do not load at optimal speed.  This is a Google ranking
    factor.
  • Yahoo Sitebuilder does not give you the ability to permanently (301) redirect the non-www
version of your website to the www version. This  prevents you from gaining the value of the
non-www links on your www version of the site.  The more links you have, the higher you
    appear in search engine results.
  • Lastly, Yahoo SiteBuilder sites can only be hosted on Yahoo.

Your site may not display consistently across multiple browsers after you have "jimmied" with the
code.  Be sure to pull up your web pages using each of the major browsers including Internet
Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari to make sure it displays correctly,

Other tags, such as meta (title, description, keyword, geo, and analytic) tags have to be inserted
into the code, but Yahoo Sitebuilder makes that easy using add-ons.  The tool never
compensates for the underlying need to understand SEO.  It only provides you with a means of
capturing what's needed.
