META TAGS - DEFINITION & USE:

A meta tag is a form of documentation that provides data about data.  For example, this <title>
My World news, regional news, local news, or anyotherkindofnews title.<title> tag tells us the page
is about news; world, regional and local news.  The <meta> tag provides metadata (information)
about a web page to search engines and web browsers. Metadata is optional and will not be
displayed for the visitor to the page, but will be read by search engines and browsers for ranking
and display purposes. Meta tags always go inside the HEAD element of your web page code,
rather than the MAIN body text.  Meta tags typically define things like the page title, description and
keywords.  Not all search engines rely on keyword tags because they were abused in past.  In
particular,
Google is the most common search engine that does not use the keyword meta tag
in it's ranking algorithm.

META TAGS WE TYPICALLY USE:

There is a lot of controversy in the search engine optimization world about which meta tags are
valuable and which ones are not.  You will always find proponents on both sides of the argument.
In our experience, the following meta tags help us get results.  The first three meta tags (title,
description & keywords) should appear right after the <HEAD> tag and in that order:

  • <HEAD>
  • <TITLE>My Page Title Here</TITLE>
  • <META name="description" content="My description here.">
  • <META name="keywords" content=“My keywords">
  • <meta name="author" content="Self Promoting Author's Name">
  • <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="My content type here">
  • <meta name="robots" content="index, follow, NOODP">
  • <meta name="y_key" content="My Yahoo Verification Key">
  • <meta name="google-site-verification" content="My Google Verification Key">
  • <meta name="msvalidate.01" content="My Bing Verification Key">
  • <meta name="geo.region" content="US-PA">
  • <meta name="state" content="Pennsylvania">
  • <meta name="country" content="United States (usa)">
  • <meta name="city" content="City">
  • <meta name="zipcode" content="12345">
  • <meta name="geo.placename" content="City, State">
  • <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.b-seenontop.com/replacement-page">
  • </HEAD>
