This page is an introduction to SEO copywriting and tells you how to write web site content that
will appeal to visitors and search engines alike.  This is just one part of our search engine
optimization or SEO design center and sibling self-help center which jointly set out to de-mystify
SEO and fuel do-it-yourself web site owners with the information and tools they need to bring
about results on their own.  

That said, if you are a web site owner looking for tips and tricks with respect to (wrt) SEO
copywriting, please seriously consider the following:  

  • Always view the content of your web site from the eyes of a first-time visitor.  Think
    about what they want and need.  Give it to them.  If you remember nothing else, this is the
    MOST important take-away from this page.
  • Build good, solid, valuable content that people will want to refer to others and come back to.
  • Keep your pages as simple as possible while still aesthetically pleasing. Search engines
    prefer plain black text on white backgrounds. Limit multimedia.
  • Use 1 or (at most) 2 primary keyword / keyword phrases per page.
  • Use the longer form and the plural form of a keyword when possible.
  • Choose primary keywords that are anticipated to drive a large volume of traffic to the site.
  • Use primary keywords and keyword phrases frequently and prominently:
  • Frequently means ~3-6 percent of the text on the page should be keywords.  
  • Prominently means using text that is large, bold, italicized, and/or bulleted.  
  • Prominently also means positioning keywords high on the page and to the left.    
  • Sprinkle secondary or long tail keyword phrases on the page where ever possible. Long tail
    keyword phrases contain 3 or more keywords and, because they are very specific, they drive
    less traffic to the site but have a higher conversion rate and return on investment.  
  • Before finalizing your choice of keywords, do a Google search and see what the top 10 are
    doing today.
  • Where possible, mirror their keyword densities and placement. Never never plagiarize.
  • Never use keywords back-to-back.    
  • Make sure the page content flows naturally.  Your site will be penalized for perceived keyword
    stacking or stuffing,
  • Set keyword context by using keywords at the top, middle and bottom of the page.  Make sure
    the keywords relate to the rest of the content on the page.  Do not, for example, have a page
    optimized for "long tail keywords" that talks about pet waste removal.
  • Use keywords in your bread crumbs.  Bread crumbs are text-based navigation links that
    show where the currently viewed web page lies in the site hierarchy. As an example, a
    product page for a "sharpee pen" might  have the breadcrumb navigation of “Home > Office
    Supplies > Writing Utensils > Sharpee Pens.”
  • Try to cultivate link exchanges with authoritative and popular sites in your subject or
    geographic location area.  Otherwise, don't bother.
  • When requesting links from others, ask that they use your keywords in their link text.  Offer to
    do the same in return.
