This page identifies our preferred tools for SEO projects.  Some are free. Others are paid.  We
have grouped tools by
phase in our SEO project methodology.

Because we are a SEO firm, note that we have not linked to any of the tools.  (We're hoarding our
link juice.)  You should have no trouble finding them.  If you do, contact us and we'll respond with
an exact link to the appropriate page.

Opportunity Evaluation Phase:
In the Opportunity Evaluation phase of any project, we are looking to identify anything that might
prevent us from being able to optimize the existing website and grow the business.

We use a mix of tools; some broad and others very specific:

  • websitegrader.com gives a good summary evaluation of your website.
  • validator.W3.org will validate your HTML and CSS code.
  • seoish.com offers a great spider simulator.
  • websiteoptimization.com offers tools for determining your file sizes and page loading speed.
  • Any browser's view source function will allow you to see meta tag content.
  • whois.domaintools.com will give you site registration details.
  • juicystudio.com will grade the intended reading level of your audience.  (Non-technical sites
should be ideally be targeting an audience with a high school education.)
  • seoquake and SEOBook each offer a toolbar that will easy access to SEO information like
Google page rank, Alexa page rank, indexed pages, incoming links, and more.
  • Google, Yahoo and Bing all have free webmaster tools that also disclose a wealth of
    information about your site.

Research & Analysis Phase:
In the Research & Analysis (R&A) phase we have two goals:  (1) to identify the best fit keywords
for a given website; and (2) to figure out what it will take for a website rank in the top 10 search
engine results.

SEObook has identified a comprehensive list of
traditional SEO tools for keyword analysis.   We
use the free
Google Adwords and paid Wordtracker tools for keyword research.  We use
iBusinessPromoter for competitive analysis.

Design, Build & Test Phases:
In the design phase, we rely on the output of prior phases and internal templates to specify, in
detail, what our website needs to satisfy in order to rank in the top 10.  Then we build, test and
launch our new or improved website.

It's always handy to have an easy to use photo editing tool when designing and building website
pages.  Here's a recent post recommending some
free photo editing tools.  We use picnik.com
because it makes it real easy to resize photos and images for Facebook.

We use a tool from
xml-sitemaps.com to convert our HTML sitemaps into XML for search engine
submission.  We recommend the
addthis.com tool be placed on every page of a website to
enable easy social bookmarking.

Link Building Phase:
We rely on two tools to assist us in identifying link building opportunities, the free Yahoo Site
Explorer
tool and the paid iBusinessPromoter tool.  Yahoo announced in July 2011 that they will
be retiring the Site Explorer tool later this fall.  Two good substitutes exist, but neither is free.  The
SEOMoz Open Site Explorer tool and Majestic SEO.

To optimize your site loading speed, we recommend the
https://developers.google.
com/pagespeed/
and http://websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze tools.  For compliance to
industry coding standards, we recommend
http://validator.w3.org/.

Performance Monitoring Phase:
In the Performance Monitoring phase our goal is to measure progress against plans to show a
demonstrable improvement in our client's website visibility.  Use use a proprietary excel
spreadsheet to baseline existing sites prior to optimization and show changes over time.  We use
iBusinessPromoter to check keyword rankings.

There are
many tools that can be used to measure keyword rankings.  Be sure to select one that
is depersonalized meaning, one which is not influenced by prior search behaviors.  If you are spot
checking using just your browser, a
search for "how to depersonalize google search" will give
you a way to disable personalized search on your Google browser.
Kpmrs.com can be set up to
email you a daily summary of your five most important keyword rankings.  They also have a widget
you can install on your own site and offer to your customers, much like we have on the right ==>.

For site analytics, there is simply no better tool that the free
Google Analytics tool.
