Keywords are important.
Keywords are important because search is important.  Ninety-three percent of people are on the
Web because they are looking to find something.  Approximately 65% of them use Google.
According to ComScore, that means 11 billion
searches are conducted on Google each and every
month.  That's over  694,000 searches per second!  They might be looking for you!

Searches are conducted by people typing words,
keywords, into their preferred search engine.
Search engines work by trying to find a match between the keywords used in a search query and
the keywords found on a web page.
Understanding the search terms or keyword phrases
people use to look for your product, service or information on the Web gives you an
opportunity to bias search results in your favor.
The objective of keyword research is to find the
single "best fit" keyword phrase to use to optimize a targeted web page.  Don't initially worry about
how much traffic the keyword phrase is predicted to deliver.  Don't worry about how easy it is to
rank for.  Just pick the single best keyword phrase that fits your page content.

Keyword selection is by far the most important choice a business owner can make when it
comes to increasing his or her visibility on the web.
We know only a few percentage of website
visitors end up becoming customers.  That means you need to attract a large amount of web
traffic with your choice of keywords. We also know if visitors find what they want on a page, they
are far more likely to stick around and/or convert.
"Best fit" keyword phrases need to precisely
and accurately reflect the targeted web page content.  The more pages you appropriately
optimize, the more visitors you will attract and retain on your website.

Targeting longer, more precise
keywords and groups of keywords
work best.
Research shows that targeting a single keyword phrase with four or more words will typically
draw less traffic, but each visitor is far more likely to convert or become a customer.  Longer,
more precise keyword phrases tend to convert better because people are usually trying to narrow
their search down to find something very specific by using more words.
Targeting groups of
these "long tail keywords" gets you the best of all worlds.
You can attract large volumes of
web traffic by using many related long tail keyword phrases together on a web site.
 Because
the phrases are closely related and match your page content, searchers are more likely to find
what they are looking for and be ready to make a buying decision.  Mark Nunney describes this
phenomenon best in his article,
The Long Tail of Keyword Research (and Why Single Keywords
Are For Losers).

This image from Matt Powell at leftclick.com blog cleverly illustrates how the long tail keywords

Keyword Research
keyword phrase that is expected to deliver a
large number of visitors (results) to a page.  The
more wordy, more precise keyword phrases are
considered "not worth targeting" because of their
low volume forecasts.  Yet as you can see from
the illustration on the left, the total number of
results delivered by the more specific keyword
phrases can add up to equal or exceed results
from the one or two more popular terms.  The
more pages containing these long tail keyword
terms, the more traffic and conversions you are
likely to generate. .
