What is Competitive Research ?
Competitive research can refer to a lot of things.  Inc. Magazine gives a great outline of the broad
definition of competitive research.  From an organic SEO perspective, our definition of competitive
research
is the process of gaining an understanding of what it will take to rank in the top ten
search engine results for your targeted keyword phrase and search engine.
You have to first
understand what the top ten ranking companies are doing today, in order to figure out what you
need to do to perform as well or better.

How Is It Done ?
SEO competitive research involves an understanding of how search engines work, search engine
ranking algorithms, and your specific website.  Competitive research:

  • looks at the top ten results for your chosen keyword phrase and search engine;   
  • analyses hundreds of criteria along six dimensions in order to understand what the top ten
    web sites are doing best; and   
  • tells you exactly what you need to do in order to rank in the top ten given no new entrants to
    the competitive environment and no change in ranking algorithms.  (Significant changes to
    ranking algorithms occur, on average, quarterly.)   

Our proprietary process produces a series of specifications that tells the team exactly what needs
to be done in order to rank in the top 10 search engine results. It is input to the creation of a work
plan that lays out the remainder of work to be done, who is responsible for doing what when, and
how much each task is going to cost in terms of time and/or dollars to complete.  

Ranking in the top ten search engine results is not easy when you consider the number (over
200) and different types of criteria Google is believed to use in it's ranking algorithm.  It's not easy
when you consider there were over 15 billion web pages at last count.  Our proprietary
TOTAL-C
checklist for evaluating websites groups search engine ranking criteria into broad categories
including technology, ownership, traffic, age, links and content.  While we can roughly measure
what others are doing, we cannot always replicate it.  Age is a good example.  If your published
domain name is brand new and each of the top ten competitors have been around for a dozen
years, the only way to compete in that category would be to purchase an existing domain name in
the same subject matter area that is older than at least the youngest of the top 10.  Otherwise
your site will have to exceed in other areas in order to make up for the shortcoming.
