Effective Link Building
Services

Link building services are an integral part of any worthwhile organic or natural search engine
optimization (SEO) project
.  You may have heard that "content is king".  That is true, but before
you get to the point where content will make or break your business you are going to need links,
and lots of them, to drive traffic to your web site.  Do you know for example, that
if you do not have
at least one inbound link to your web site, it will not get
spidered & indexed by search
engines?

Both in-coming and out-going links influence the ranking of your web site.

  • In-bound links from directories, search engines, social media and other reputable web sites
demonstrate the perceived popularity and value of your web site.
  • Out-bound links to other high quality and reputable web sites show your willingness to share
    and help others.
  • Links from other related web sites establish your site as a valued part of a niche or
community and reinforces the subject area or categorization of your web site.

One-way Link Building
One-way links are in-bound links to your site from web sites that do not ask for or require a
link back to their site.
An excellent example of this is an incoming link from any of the reputable
online directories.  We recommend 4 different directories:

  • Yahoo Directory is the largest online directory on the web and costs $299 / year for you to
subscribe to.  Follow their submission guidelines and you will hear back from them fairly
    quickly.
  • The second most influential directory on the web is DMOZ or the Open Directory Project
(ODP).  The Open Directory Project is the largest free and most comprehensive human-
edited directory on the Web.  Follow their submission guidelines as closely as possible and
expect to wait a very long time to hear back from them, if at all.
  • Best of the web is the oldest web directory. Once a year, on Cyber Monday they offer to list
your site for 50% off the regular list price of $149 (recurring) or $299 (one time).
  • business.com is the largest online business directory.  SEOBook.com often has discounts.
You can sometimes find discounts just by doing a Google search.

There are lots of other directories on the web.  Some charge, some do not.  Niche directories
related to the content of your web site are highly recommended provided they have lots of other
well known websites listed in their index.  When deciding whether or not to request a listing in a
directory, consider the following:

  • Look to see if your competitors are listed.  If none of your competitors are listed, they clearly
do not consider the directory valuable.  Why should you?
  • Confirm the directory does not accept sites associated with casinos, pharmacies or
economically or ethically challenged web sites.  You do not want to be associated with any of
    these types of sites.
  • Avoid small, private directories with a low page rank.  These are often part of link farms (see
below) and best avoided.  According to Wikipedia, a link farm is a collection of web sites
that all link to one another.
  • If in doubt, do not list your site in a questionable directory.

Other excellent sources of incoming links are the publication articles, press releases and blogs
and the use of social networking and bookmarking sites.  Unfortunately many of these sites
do
not share their "link juice"
, a phenomenon called "NoFollow".   NoFollow is a link attribute that
tells search engines not to pass on any credibility or influence to the site that is the recipient of
the link. The nofollow attribute was originally created to help the blogging community deter
readers from leaving non-value-add comments on their blog posts.    Learn more
about nofollow
sites here.  It's helpful when you are trying to find blogs that will share their link juice with you
when you offer more than just a meaningless comment.

Two-way and reciprocal links
Some directories and many small business web sites ask for a reciprocal link in exchange for a
link to your site.  There is nothing wrong with accepting a reciprocal or 3-way link exchange
request.  Check the items noted above and limit your selections to reputable directories and web
sites targeting a similar demographic.  Ask yourself, "Does this site offer anything of value to my
visitors?"  Only exchange links if the answer is "yes" and be sure to tell your visitors why you are
sharing the link.  For additional help, take a look at our
link exchange policies and procedures
page where we list helpful guidelines about link sharing.

Additional considerations
Inbound links from unestablished directories will lower your web site ranking.  These directories
have a tendency to drop your site from their listings after a short amount of time.  If you previously
provided a reciprocal link, it's hardly a fair exchange.  Unrelated niche sites will add absolutely no
value to your web ranking.
Ideal reciprocal links come from related web sites with a good
page rank.  Link quality is always far more important than link quantity.
 The tool we use to
gain top ten Google (see
guaranteed-top-10) search engine rankings says one relevant, related
web site link equals 5-20 unrelated, irrelevant web site links
.  Our site, for example, values
links from web design or SEO sites and sites that are in the same geographic location as
ourselves.
