not just SEO.  It includes things like

Define Search Engine Optimization.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a way to increase website visibility and profit. It involves the
use of tools, techniques and best practices to position a website so that it appears at or near the
top of search engine results when certain key words or phrases are typed into a search engine.

At a conceptual level, search engine optimization is really just about words and links.  Think about
when someone is searching for something on the Web.  They type words (keywords) into their
favorite search engine and browser.  If those same words (keywords) appear on one of your web
pages, it has a chance of appearing in search engine results.  If that same page has lots of
other
related, popular and authoritative websites pointing (linking) to it, the chances increase
exponentially.

At a working level, search engine optimization is far more complex. Google, for example, uses
over 200 criteria to rank and order results.

Because a top 10 ranking is h
ighly competitive, results can be short-lived and expensive.  That
said, there are always
ways to make search engine optimization affordable.

Why is search engine optimization
important?
Search engine optimization is important because search is important.  According to 2011 Industry
statistics derived from Comscore and Hubspot, over one and a half billion Internet users conduct
more than
4 billion searches every day:

  • 46% of daily searches are to research products and / or services.
  • 70% of clicks are on organic (unsponsored) results.
  • 60% of all organic clicks go to the top three organic search results.
  • 75% of searchers never look beyond the first page of search results.
  • 80% of US Internet users search online before they make a purchase, even if the purchase
is made at a local business.
  • 35% of US Internet users own smart phones.
  • 40% of US smart phone users compare prices on their phone while in-store shopping.
  • 74% of smart phone users have made an online purchase using their phone.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is about traffic and location. Just like gas station owners find it
most profitable to build their businesses on the corner of a busy intersection, the most profitable
websites appear at or near the top of search engine results for everyday popular search terms
and browsers.
On average, the top 3 websites earn 65% of their industry's total online revenue.

Getting ranked in the top 30 unpaid (organic) search engine results for a popular and
commercial key word phrase is important.  Websites that use search engine optimization to
target the "right" audience get shared socially, have repeat visitors, and are more likely to have
visitors convert into customers.

Why is search engine optimization a wise
investment?
Consumers are changing. They are increasingly less tolerant of intrusive advertising. Eighty
percent
of US Internet users research their options on the Internet before making a purchasing
decision.

Search engine optimization is a wise investment because
it lets you be found when consumers
know what they want and are looking for it.
If they don't find you, they will find your competition.

What is the first step?
